Yeats Country Inspired New Film ‘Quintessentially Irish’

Quintessentially Irish

A brand new documentary called ‘Quintessentially Irish’ aims to bring viewers on a historical journey through Ireland seen through the eyes of Irish stars, and Co Sligo was reportedly chosen as a filming location by director Frank Mannion, according to the Irish Star.

The President of Ireland Michael D Higgins, Former Ambassador of Ireland to the United States Daniel Mulhall and acclaimed actor Pierce Brosnan all discuss the social and cultural impact of Yeats, as the documentary was partly filmed against the breathtaking backdrop of Co Sligo and features imagery s of the Lake Isle of Inisfree, Ben Bulben, and Drumcliffe church.

Interestingly enough, WB Yeats is buried next to Brumcliffe Church.

“My mother was an English teacher and her great love was WB Yeats and it was crucial to me, not just to honor my mother but for Yeats, not just as a poet but as a man whose career is extraordinary” Mannion said, during an interview with The Independent.

“Sligo is such a beautiful county and it is not hard to see why it inspired WB and Jack B Yeats so much in their respective careers.”

According to the Irish Independent, Brosnan spoke about rekindling his relationship with his Irish mother and says that he chose films based on their location so that he could stay close to her.

“We speak every day. May’s 91. There was time lost, you know, at the beginning of our lives together. She was 19, 20 when she had me” Brosnan said, per the report. “It’s very young. Very young. We’d had so many years of separation and hellos and goodbyes. So we’ve made up a lot of life over the years.”

According to the synopsis: “A journey through Ireland’s cultural heritage, exploring the origins of whiskey production, the world-famous Guinness brewery, age-old equestrian pursuits, traditional Gaelic athletics, and the enduring Dunsany Castle.”

Brosnan, Jeremy Iron and Usain Bolt star.

Quintessentially Irish is in UK and Irish cinemas from April 26th and the US from March 12th.
